STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — With notable Staten Island chefs and their soup creations, the National Lighthouse Museum celebrated its fifth year of the Lighthouse Point Fest in St. George on Sunday.

“Let them eat soup!” declared a Marie Antoinette-costumed Anne Young of Stapleton at the day’s noon start time.

Museum director Linda Dianto delighted in the weather and her many helping hands. She said, “We were fortunate to have such a wonderful team of volunteers from St. Joseph’s Hill and the Curtis High School Junior ROTC. Over a thousand visitors strolled through the Fest enjoying the sounds of several local entertainers, visiting the over 50 booths and the museum — plus enjoying the sea spirit of the day!”

She added, “Being harbor-side, we enjoyed the pleasure of having visitors board the Sea Dart II led by the Sea Scouts and view the spectacular water show of the Historic Fire Boat, the John J. Harvey.”

The Sea Dart II is one of the largest Sea Scout vessels on the East Coast, based in Linden, N.J.

A few hundred feet from a docked Staten Island Ferry blazing orange on this fall afternoon, chefs ladled hearty soups plus riffs on chowder as a nod to the nearby sea.

Guests voted for the best entry.

Third place in the voting tally was West Shore Inn. The Travis steakhouse featured a chunky chorizo corn chowder with corn bread crumbles.

Caterer Kim Leo of Kim Cooks took second place with a traditional lobster bisque, a silky, rich concoction with chunks of lobster.

Peter Botros represented his several borough restaurants — Stone House in Clove Lake Park, Sally’s Southern in West Brighton, Grant City’s Rustic Pizza and Pasteria plus Violette’s Cellar, Sofia’s Taqueria of Rosebank, the Mall and Eltingville (the latter open only for takeout.) He took top prize with a shrimp pot pie soup. The elaborate setup showcased a multi-layered creation finished with truffle foam, a signature touch at contests.

For the “Best Mother and Son” Entry, Christine Rivelli and Jesse Rivelli of Ronnie’s Sandwich Shoppe took top prize with Escarole Bean and Potato Leek, available this week at the New Dorp restaurant.

Chef and caterer Mike DiLeo presented the “Chef of the Future Award.” This honor went to a high School student at Xavarian High School in Brooklyn, Rosie Maese. Her masterpiece proved to be a chunky Hungarian Paprika Mushroom Soup. She was the youngest competitor of the day.

Co-organizer Dr. Adrienne Ferretti marveled in the younger attendees’ expressions of delight while tasting the various soups. Some favorites of the youngsters included a Minestrone from Nino’s in Grasmere served by resident Lighthouse keeper, Charlie Sullivan.

She said, “These kids were the funniest and the youngest and best critics.”

Danny Mills of Ruddy and Dean in St. George said, “It was a nice event.” Along with Pier 76 and Empire Outlet eateries, his steakhouse is one of the closest restaurants to the National Lighthouse Museum for visitors to Staten Island.

Master pastry chef Biagio Settepani put his own baking acumen into the mix. He complimented his soup with a cheesy puff pastry stick.

Other businesses that entered included Pastosa of West Brighton with an Italian Wedding Soup. As the operation was occupied with the Forest Avenue Stroll, their creation was presented by Francesca and Ron Cole of Style-O-Pedic in New Dorp.

A total of 10 restaurant owners participated with 11 soups including Reggiano’s and Reggiano’s II of Tottenville and Great Kills respectively. Their sausage-on-lentil samples drew comments among festival guests who hoped to see it on the restaurants’ fall menu.

Dr. Ferretti said, “It’s important to have events that celebrate Staten Island Heritage. The Lighthouse Point Fest showcases the beautiful waterfront we have here on Staten Island. Along With the Legendary Soup Contest, it is a wonderful inter-generational family event and I am proud to be a part of it.”

In the crowd were District Attorney Mike McMahon and former congressman Max Rose.
