UNC students will once again be able to drink from the Old Well on FDOC - The Daily Tar Heel

The Old Well will be functional to celebrate a longtime UNC tradition on the first day of classes — a sip for good luck.

Campus legend suggests that students who drink from the well will earn good grades throughout the school year and maybe even a perfect 4.0 GPA.

With the renewed mask mandate in public indoor spaces for Orange County, the long-held tradition will occur with COVID-19 safety precautions on Wednesday. The Old Well will be operational with ambassadors to support distancing in the line, according to University Media Relations. Face masks will not be required outdoors, but are encouraged at all gatherings.

Students who wish to participate in the tradition will also have the opportunity to get bottled “well water” at The Weeks of Welcome Help Tents located in The Pit and the Student and Academic Services Building (SASB) Courtyard.

“We ask that students who decide to take a sip from the Old Well on the first day of classes for good luck consider wearing a mask and keeping their distance if there is a line on Wednesday,” said Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Amy Johnson in a statement.

The University currently follows the UNC System's 'Get Vaccinated or Test Weekly' requirement.
