There are plenty of places to get a cup of coffee in Easton.

But how many of them have six cats up for adoption, waiting to greet the patrons? That’s just one of the features of Project Paw, a community outreach center with a thrift shop and café. The Center for Animal Health and Welfare is setting up Project Paw at 452 Northampton St.

“We wanted a space where people could walk or ride the bus, where people could come locally and we could offer resources,” said Kelly Bauer, executive director of the Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Williams Township.

The idea took off after the success of a pop-up store at the former Wells Fargo bank in Easton. The Center for Animal Health and Welfare sold consignment items at the pop-up store from January through May.

“When we saw the success of the pop-up store, we saw people enjoyed consignment and thrift store shopping and thought it was a great way to fund the resource center,” Bauer said.

Consignment items will likely include clothes, knick-knacks and small furniture.

Project Paw will offer programs like spay and neuter clinics, CPR for animals and lectures on compassion fatigue for animal-related professionals. Project Paw is the mission statement for the shelter: working to adopt out and advocate for animals.

Project Paw will also include Betty’s corner, which is named for a former cat lover and benefactor of the center. Betty’s corner is a café with coffee, tea and individually packaged snacks. There will be six cats up for adoption. Customers can’t bring pets, but for a donation they can sip a hot beverage and curl up with the cats whether they take a cat home or not.

“For people who can’t adopt a cat or are just having a bad day, how much worse could it get when you have a cat in your lap?” Bauer asked.

The center is always looking for new ways to reach the community and raise funds. It has 230 animals in its care and faces a constant demand for food, funds and volunteers. You can donate at the nonprofit’s website.

Construction is underway at Project Paw. Bauer hopes to open Project Paw this September.
