New peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from Candwich are packaged in kits that fit into standard soft drink vending machines which dispense 12-fl.oz. cans.
According to Candwich, the novel sandwich kit can be eaten anywhere, from the golf course to offices, movie theaters, pool sides, or on a hike, picnic, camping trip or drive.
Each soda can-shaped package contains pre-sliced whole wheat bread and peanut butter and jelly, along with its own packet and a wooden spreader. The kit also includes a wet nap, being an authentic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Each sandwich contains 15g. of protein, 6g. of fiber and is only 430 calories. Package weight is 4-oz.
A PBJ Candwich has a potential shelf life of 12 months at room temperature, the company said. This is possible because the pH, or acidity, is controlled in a specific range and the bread is formulated with an optimal amount of water, also known as water activity. Additionally, the bread is sealed in a foil wrap with an oxygen scavenger packet to remove oxygen.
Canwich pointed out that its sandwich design doesn’t smush, so when the time comes for its quick assembly and can be enjoyed fresh.
Marketed under the name "Candwich PBJ Sandwich Kits," the line is offered in grape and strawberry jelly flavors. The company is planning to introduce new sandwich varieties, including pizza and honey BBQ chicken, as well as dessert options.
Candwich is a brand of Salt Lake City-based MK1 Foods Corp.
