We are not sure about y’all, but now is the time for a stiff drink. We have been through the wringer for more than a year and the cycle of ups and downs seems never-ending. So, while we are at home, or away from home, lets mix things up wherever we are and try to look toward a better tomorrow. To help you through this rocky time, we have a couple of drinks that might be just a little tiny step outside of your comfort zone but easy enough to do almost anywhere.
Not to be funny, but the Hurricane is an easy and delicious drink to make. It’s a sweet cocktail made with rum, lime juice, and passion fruit syrup and served in a tall glass. It’s one of the most popular drinks served in New Orleans. It was invented at the world famous Pat O’Brien’s, but now served at most any bar.
Ingredients: Half part gold rum, squeeze one full lime to get the juice, add one part Dark rum, One part Light rum, Passion fruit syrup. You can get passion fruit and most any grocery store. Garnish this drink with orange wheel or cherry.
Preparation: Shake the rums, passion fruit syrup, and lime juice with ice, then pour into the glass and serve over ice.
Served: “On the rocks”; poured over ice in tall glass if you don’t have a hurricane glass
Next let’s delve into the Old Fashioned which is a perfect drink to show of your personality. To make your own house version, experiment with the amount of sugar, types of bitters and garnishes.
Ingredients: 1 sugar cube, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, 2 orange wheels, 2 cherries, club soda and 2 ounces whiskey.
Preparation: place sugar cube in a glass, dash the bitters onto the cube along with a splash of soda water. Add one cherry and one orange and muddle the fruit and sugar together. Add whiskey.
Served: Pour over ice and garnish with the remaining cherry and orange.
The homemade Margarita is one we think you should know. It’s crisp, tart and refreshing. It’s good from brunch to dinner, in fact there is not bad time to have a margarita in hand.
Ingredients: Tequila, Cointreau (or triple sec) and lime juice. Salt for rim
Preparation: take tequila, Cointreau and lime juice and shake it together in a shaker with about 4 ice cubes. This gets it nice and chilled. If you don’t have a shaker tin, use a mason jar.
Served: Strain the drink into a glass and add ice. Lime is a good garnish. Add Jalapeño slices if you want to add a little spicy kick. To salt the rim, kosher salt is best or flaky sea salt. Put salt on a plate, take a lime wedge and slide it around the rim of the glass, tilt glass so salt only goes on the outer rim. Shake off any loose salt into the sink.
If you have a favorite cocktail that is easy for you to make at home, let us know so we can share it with cocktail lovers everywhere. Remember, even after the darkest days, comes the light. We will be ready with drink in hand.
Cheers, y’all.
